Contemporary Art in the East of Scotland
Susie Lee's work embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including large and small canvases,
watercolour, drawing, printmaking and sculpture.
The theme of her work is nature and its contrasts, the tranquility and the drama, its power and its vulnerability,
the scale and the minutae. The work could be described as being a poetic interpretation of landscape/seascape with
the landscape taken as a metaphor for human emotion. She investigates spatial relationships within the environment
in terms of ways to describe the subject. Differing compositions strengthen the understanding of the place and
an abstraction exists in the selection of images from nature which emphasize the contrast and the emotional
response.
Susie explores the tension between the flatness of the picture surface and the illusionary depth within the frame.
