Contemporary Art in the East of Scotland
Donald Mckenzie was born in Glasgow but brought up on the Isle of Skye. He studied painting at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art from 1963 - 1968 before moving to London to work during the late 60s and early 70s. He then spent a year working in Paris at Atelier 17 (now Atelier Contrepoint) under the hugely influential Stanley Hayter, before returning to Dundee to help set up and manage The Dundee Printmakers Workshop.
Donald has since returned to Skye where he continues to paint whilst also finding time to play the fiddle
(which he made himself) with local groups. His paintings vary considerably in style from delicate landscapes
in watercolour to idiosyncratic figurative works. More recently these differing styles have been combined
and we see scenes of musicians, dancers, animals, shoppers set against the beautiful Skye landscape.
In 2003 Donald opened The Blue Studio Gallery on the Isle of Skye, where he paints and exhibits his work. To visit his website please click here
