David Cook in his studio
Cook was born in 1957 in Dunfermline and attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee under Alberto Morrocco, from 1979-84, receiving seven awards. He then won a travel award which took him to Paris, Amsterdam, Belgium and Cyprus. He won the Guthrie Award at the RSA in 1985 and was given Scottish Arts Council Awards in 1985, 1988 and 1989.
Cook travelled regularly in the 1990s to Turkey, the Balearics and to Southern Africa in 1997. Back in Aberdeenshire his sense of belonging became deeply imbedded; he saw the seasons change. He paints the whole calendar, imbued in the natural world which has become his subject and substance.
Cook is a prolific artist who has followed his own path of visionary works. He has become obsessed with the rugged coastline, wild seas and the tempestuous skies of the north-east.
His move to an isolated fishermans cottage on the edge of the North Sea near Johnshaven has very much inspired David and, in his current work, he uses his trademark heavy application of oils to capture the drama of this spectacular environment.
“I work alone. My work comes from the heart. It expresses a state of mind. It is a direct response to the experience of seeing.
My work is based on observation. I build up an impasto, the real equivalent of the Earth which is my true subject.”
David shows in a number of key galleries across the UK and overseas. His work has been shown in London, Chicago, Glasgow and Los Angeles.
This is his first major show since exhibiting with The Scottish Gallery in 2009.
